The potters' quarter of ancient Athens, northwest of the Acropolis. Its name comes from the Greek κέραμος keramos, baked earth. The areas of the Kerameikos near the river bank were continuously flooded, so they became a cemetery, which gradually became the most important in ancient Athens.
